Ken envisaged a series of artificial surf reefs built up and down the coast, which would provide point breaks in most winds.

I took Ken very seriously, as he is the most practical, problem solver I have met on the Gold Coast. Give Ken a problem and he will come up with a practical cost effective solution. We sat together at my Atari 1040 ST [state of the art 12 years ago (1988)] and drew up the plans using Neochrome (a software graphics package.)

We completed our design and printed out 12 copies. We then (late 1988) sent these to the Gold Coast City Council, the local newspapers and to a couple of engineering firms.

We were never approached about our ideas and thought that the seed had fallen on barren ground.

We are delighted that the Gold Coast City Council took up the initiative, (we like to think in response to the awareness our proposal created -in other words, our ripple had rocked.)  and we look forward to seeing the waves breaking once the reef begun in 1999 is completed. Next
